TN DGP Rathore Transferred, Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal Likely To Assume Charge

The Tamil Nadu Home Department said that Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal is expected to take charge as the DGP on Wednesday.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu government has transferred State Director General of Police (DGP) Sandeep Rai Rathore and posted him as DGP Prisons and Correctional Services. An official release on Wednesday said that K Shankar, who was serving as ADGP, Prisons and Correctional Services, was transferred and posted as DGP, Enforcement Bureau, CID, Chennai, to fill the existing vacancy.

Sources from the Home Department also said that Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, is expected to take charge as the DGP on Wednesday. Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal is currently serving as the Special Director General in the Border Security Force.
For the past nine months, Tamil Nadu has been without a full-time DGP after the superannuation of DGP Shankar Jiwal in August 2025. On Tuesday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Aggarwal’s repatriation from BSF to his parent cadre with immediate effect.
Aggarwal is also holding an additional charge of the force’s Eastern Command headquartered in Kolkata. The order was issued following a proposal from the Union Home Ministry.
Before his deputation to the Centre, Aggarwal held several key positions in the Tamil Nadu Police. He served as commissioner of police, Greater Chennai Police, and later as director general of armed police and special director general of CB-CID.
