Madurai: 5 Killed, Over 40 injured As 2 Buses Collide Near Melur
Police have launched an investigation to determine whether the crash was caused by driver error, over-speeding or a mechanical failure.

Madurai: Five people, including a woman, were killed and more than 40 others were injured in a head-on collision between a private omni bus and a state-run bus near Kottampatti in Madurai district early on Monday.
The private omni bus, travelling from Chennai to Marthandam, allegedly lost control, crossed the median on the four-lane highway at Vanjinagar, and crashed into an oncoming government bus heading from Madurai to Tiruchirappalli. The impact also sent the omnibus into a roadside passenger shelter, completely damaging the structure.
The deceased are identified as Chiriya Pushpam, Anand Raj, Surya, Mohammed Yasin and Abraham. More than 40 passengers, including women and children, sustained injuries. The injured were admitted to Melur Government Hospital and Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital for treatment.
Police, fire and rescue personnel, and National Highways patrol teams rescued passengers trapped inside the buses and shifted the injured to hospitals. Traffic on the highway was disrupted for several hours before the damaged buses were removed using cranes and normal movement was restored.
