Kanchi ATM Robbers Escape in Telangana, Pointing Guns at Cops
The police at the tollgate got into a car and chased the gang for a long distance but the gangsters made good their escape.
Chennai:The gang which cut the ICICI bank ATM machine and stole around Rs. 9 lakh at Somangalam, in Kanchipuram district, was blocked by the police at a tollgate in Telangana, but they escaped in their car after raising their guns and threatening to shoot the police.
The police at the tollgate got into a car and chased the gang for a long distance but the gangsters made good their escape. Later, the Tambaram police who went to Telangana found the car at an isolated forest and seized it.
The police are carrying out further inquiries based on the number plate in the car and they presume it could be a stolen car. Suspecting that the gang members could have fled to Mumbai, in Maharashtra, the police have formed additional special teams to find them.
Around 2.45 am on Tuesday, the gang entered the ICICI ATM booth in Pudupedu village, along the Sriperumbudur-Kundrathur road, in Somangalam. They used a welding machine and cut the ATM machine and took away the money before fleeing in a vehicle.
Security guards are not placed in the booth but CCTVs have been installed and connected to the bank headquarters in Mumbai through the Internet. When the gang entered the ATM booth and tried to break the machine, the siren in the bank headquarters went off. The location of the ATM was also known to the bank headquarters and the bank officials immediately alerted the Somangalam police station.
It is said the personnel in the police station were unable to find the ATM and looked for it at several places before reaching the ATM at Somangalam. When they reached the spot, the gangsters had decamped with the money. Though the gangsters had sprayed chemicals on the camera, the police could access the footage from the central surveyor.
Three special squads have been formed to find the gangsters and forensic experts are also analysing the place for evidence. The police are also tracing the mobile phone conversations from the mobile towers to get a clue about the theft.
Though there were many attempts in Chennai’s suburbs to rob ATM machines, the robbers were unable to succeed since they flee after the siren sounds.
