Kamal Haasan to Enter Rajya Sabha with DMK Backing

Actor-politician secures Rajya Sabha seat as DMK allots one to Makkal Needhi Maiam

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan is poised to make his parliamentary debut as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has decided to back his nomination to the Rajya Sabha. The ruling party in Tamil Nadu will allocate one of its four upcoming Rajya Sabha seats to Haasan’s party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), marking a significant political milestone for the actor and his relatively new political outfit.

Haasan founded MNM in 2018, aiming to bring transparency and accountability into politics. While the party has yet to secure major electoral wins, its alliance with the DMK signals growing political relevance. The move is also seen as a strategic gesture by the DMK to widen its support base by associating with a popular figure like Haasan.

The decision was formalised through resolutions passed at the MNM Executive and Working Committee meeting held on May 28, 2025. Resolution 1 confirmed Haasan as MNM’s Rajya Sabha candidate, as per the 2024 Lok Sabha election agreement with DMK. Resolution 2 urged alliance partners to fully support Haasan’s nomination for the June 19 Rajya Sabha polls.

The announcement coincides with the promotion of Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life, underscoring his dual journey as a cultural icon and political aspirant.
