Kaaval Karangal Reunites 70-year-old Woman with Family

Chennai: The ‘Kaaval Karangal’, a centre for assistance run by the Greater Chennai police has rescued a 70-year-old woman who was roaming in front of the Central railway station and was reunited with her family on Wednesday. In 2026, the centre rescued 752 persons roaming on the streets and about 200 of them were united with their families.

The 70-year-old woman Rani was found in front of the Central railway station and she was made to stay in a home.

Kaval Karangal inspector Mary Raju spoke to the woman and found out she belongs to Vembakkam in Ponneri in Thiruvallur district, Her photo was sent through WhatsApp to the Ponneri police station. When an enquiry was conducted by the Ponneri police, it was found that a woman Papitha had given a complaint that her grandmother Rani was missing from July 5.

The woman came to Pookadai market to buy flowers for her elder daughter’s death anniversary and did not find her way back to Ponneri. The elderly woman was reunited with her family on Wednesday.

In the last 5 years from the inception of Kaaval Karangal, 10,522 persons were rescued and 3,130 are staying at homes. A total of 4,295 persons were reunited with their families and 1,146 who are mentally challenged are being treated besides 521 persons who are undergoing treatment for illness. The Kaaval Karangal had recovered 7,196 dead bodies and performed cremation for them with the help of NGOs.
