Jailed for Two Weeks Over Speech Against CM Vijay, DMK MLA Gets Bail
The court asked him to file an affidavit not to make such speeches again against the Chief Minister
Chennai: The Madras high court on Monday granted bail to Vilathikulam DMK MLA G.V. Markandayan, two weeks after his arrest for making a speech threatening and defaming Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The court asked him to file an affidavit not to make such speeches again against the Chief Minister.
Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan who granted the bail also directed the MLA to appear before the investigating officer in Thoothukudi every day for a period of two weeks, except on days when the Assembly is in session.
When the matter came up for hearing on Monday, state public prosecutor John Sathyan said there was no objection to granting him bail since the Assembly session is starting soon.
He also said the MLA should be prevented from making such remarks in future.
Markandayan in a public meeting on July 18 had threatened to break the bones of the Chief Minister besides making highly abusive and derogatory remarks against him.
A complaint was registered against him on July 19 for making threatening and defamatory remarks against the Chief Minister.
On July 20, Markandayan was arrested and the Thoothukudi Magistrate ordered him to be remanded.
