Indian Leather Industry Has Gone Global

The IFMEA has projected robust growth prospects – growth of over 15 to 20 percent over the next three years ahead for the leather goods industry that was experiencing recovery following a challenging period.

Chennai: With the Indian leather Industry evolving from a sourcing hub into a fashion partner, the leather fashion show to be held in Chennai on February 1 will be showcasing the industry’s present strength and also hold a spotlight on the country’s expanding leather goods industry and foster partnerships between manufacturers and retailers across the nation.

Organised by the Indian Fine Leather Manufacturers and Exporters Association (IFLMEA), the fashion show that is being conducted at Hotel ITC Grand Chola in Chennai on February 1, would feature over 14 major makers of leather products from across India demonstrating the industry’s capabilities in both ovine and bovine leather manufacturing.

Addressing a media conference in Chennai, IFMEA chairman Ateequr Rahman said the fashion show would focus on the industry’s attention to the latest expressions of styles and designs in the world of leather fashion, providing a platform for global brands and international purchasers to see for themselves the exceptional quality and innovative designs emerging from India.

As an extended part of the fashion show, a brand symposium would also be held on February 2 from 10.30 am to 5 pm, serving as a targeted meeting ground between leather manufacturing brands and retailers from Tier 1 and 2 cities to forge partnerships, consumer insights and discuss market trends.

Participants would display an extensive range of products, including premium footwear, designer leather garments, luxury handbags and exclusive leather accessories, said K R Vijayan, convenor of the fashion show and Symposium 26, said that the show would feature 14 showstoppers and over 70 models.

Retailers would provide manufacturers with feedback on consumer expectations and market dynamics while brands would educate retailers and end consumers about product features and quality standards, Yavar Dhala, co-convener of the Brand Symposium, said, adding that the collaborative approach would ensure that premium leather products reached discerning Indian consumers through optimized distribution channels.
