Ilayaraja Completes 50 Years in Tamil Film Music

Composer of over 8,500 songs, Ilayaraja marks golden jubilee since his debut in 1975

Chennai: State Minister for Tamil Development and Information, M P Saminathan, congratulated the State's celebrated musical genius Ilayaraja on completing 50 years in Tamil film music after starting his journey on May 14, 1975, by composing music for the film ‘Annakizhi’ that hit the screens in 1976.

Saminathan, in a statement on Wednesday, said that the maestro celebrating his golden jubilee in film music was a proud moment for all in the State and wished him all the best. In the 50 years, Ilayaraja had composed tunes for over 8,500 film songs and scored the music for more than 1,500 movies, he said.

Besides having the distinction of being the first Indian to work with the London Symphony Orchestra, Ilayaraja had been bestowed the national titles like Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, apart from winning the national award for film music directors four times.
