HC Moved Seeking Probe Into IPS Officer's Rs 24-Cr Gold Purchase Before Veeramani Case Closure

The petitioner, Varaaki, has also sought an investigation into property transactions worth Rs 147.87 crore allegedly executed shortly before the filing of an Action Drop Report in the case.

Chennai:A petition has been filed before the Madras High Court seeking an independent probe into allegations that an IPS officer purchased gold worth Rs 24 crore using funds allegedly received as illegal gratification in connection with the closure of a criminal case involving GEM Granites proprietor Veeramani.

The petitioner, Varaaki, has also sought an investigation into property transactions worth Rs 147.87 crore allegedly executed shortly before the filing of an Action Drop Report in the case.

In the additional affidavit, Varaaki, a whistleblower, alleged that the funds were routed through Prakash Kannaiyan, who, according to the petitioner, had left India and remained absconding after the commencement of further investigation.

The petitioner has sought an independent investigation into the financial transactions, including the source of funds used for the alleged gold purchase, the persons who facilitated the transactions and the ultimate ownership of the assets acquired.

The affidavit states that substantial properties connected with GEM Granites were conveyed on February 2 and 5, 2026, shortly before an Action Drop Report was filed on February 18, 2026.

According to the affidavit, the High Court, by an order dated September 30, 2026, recorded submissions that information available to the petitioner could reveal the involvement of officials and an alleged attempt to cover up the crime.

Following the court’s order, Varaaki appeared before the Special Investigation Team’s investigating officer on October 1 and 6 and furnished information, documents and written submissions relating to the case.

Meanwhile, Public Prosecutor R John Sathyan informed Madras High Court that a chargesheet will be filed in three weeks. The submission was made before Justice V Lakshminarayanan during hearing of petitions seeking CBI probe into the sexual assault of children. The judge perused the SIT report and directed it to be kept in safe custody by the Registrar (judicial) and adjourned the case by three weeks.
