Gudalur Foresters Fan Across Jungles to Track Killer Tiger
This is the second such incident in a fortnight in the same locality
Ooty: Forest department teams have fanned across the jungles in O’ Valley limits of Gudalur forest division in western Nilgiris to track the man-eater tiger, which struck again on Friday evening killing an old man. This is the second such incident in a fortnight in the same locality. As the situation has turned volatile, some organisations have called for a 48-hour bandh from Thursday morning in protest against the forest department.
After a tiger killed a farm hand in Lauresten limits two weeks ago, that led to public unrest, the foresters installed camera traps at vantage points, besides posting forest teams in the area to track the movement of big cats. But nothing tangible happened as the animal remained elusive over the past two weeks.
It struck again on Friday evening killing one Ravichandran, aged 56, in the Lauresten locality, making the public restive. Residents staged a stir and confronted the forest officials verbally for failing to keep the stray animals at bay. Following this, the foresters deployed many teams in the locality, besides placing cages and installing camera traps in around 40 points to trace the movement of tigers in the vicinity.
