Govt Will Go On Appeal Against Thiruparankundram Verdict

Criticizing the move to go on an appeal, State BJP media in-charge A N S Prasad, reacting to Regupathy’s statement, said the State government should accept the High Court order and act accordingly.

Chennai: The State government and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department would go on an appeal against the Madras High Court order allowing the lighting of a ‘deepam’ atop the Thiruparankundram hillock, Minister for Mines S Regupathy said on Tuesday.

Since lighting the deepam was not part of the tradition in Thiruparankundram since the time of Rajaji, K Kamaraj, M G Ramachandran, J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi, the government would appeal against the verdict that was flawed, he told the media in Chennai.

A case on the same issue was filed during the tenure of Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister but was dismissed as there was no precedent for it in the past 100 years of history, he said.

He accused the BJP of creating chaos with a view to disrupting law and order and stoking communal disharmony.
