Governor R.V. Arlekar Nominates Senior Academician to Bharathiar Varsity Syndicate

Coimbatore: Prof. Dr. A. Sangamithra, a senior academician of the Coimbatore region, who is Professor and head of the department of economics and former dean of the faculty of Arts at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, has been nominated as a member of the Syndicate of Bharathiar University here as the Chancellor’s nominee by Governor R.V. Arlekar.

Dr. Sangamithra, with 30 years of teaching and 35 years of research experience, currently serves as the president of the Bharathiar University Women’s Care Centre and specialises in health and medical economics, human resource economics and behavioural economics.

As an accomplished project director and research coordinator, she successfully completed nine major research projects funded by premier national organisations, including the UGC and ICSSR. Her major funded studies have addressed the treatment-seeking behaviour and financial costs of married infertile women, healthcare demand and insurance awareness among urban diabetic households, employment and healthcare costs of the transgender community and the economic consequences and coping mechanisms of cancer patients.

Her academic contributions extend significantly to research supervision and mentorship. She has successfully guided 22 Ph.D. scholars, 24 M.Phil. scholars and 80 M.A. research projects. Her doctoral supervision has covered important areas such as non-communicable diseases, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, women’s cancers, women’s oncology, Ayurveda health tourism and economic concepts in Classical Sangam Literature.

Winner of many awards, her multifaceted contributions to teaching, research, administration, public service, literature, and social development reflect her distinguished academic leadership and commitment to societal well-being.
