Governor Refers Bill On Varsities To President
The Bill referred to the President, the Tamil Nadu Private Universities (Amendment) Bill 2026, seeks to remove the existing restrictions for creating new private universities like the minimum requirement of 100 acres of continuous land to start a private university.
Chennai: Reserving the Private Universities Bill for Presidential assent, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar gave him stamp of approval to the 12 other Bills passed by the TVK government in the recent Assembly session.
Those that were given assent by Arlekar included the Bill providing vehicles to MLAs, VAT on TASMAC liquor, TNPSC recruitment for Urban Local Bodies and others amending the DTCP and the Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Commission.
The Bill referred to the President, the Tamil Nadu Private Universities (Amendment) Bill 2026, seeks to remove the existing restrictions for creating new private universities like the minimum requirement of 100 acres of continuous land to start a private university.
Another restriction laid down by the existing Act was the stipulation for universities to maintain a minimum permanent fund of Rs 50 crore to manage administrative expenses in the event of the dissolution of the University.
Under the amendment brought in by the TVK government the maximum land required for starting a private university is 12 acres in Greater Chennai Corporation area, 18 acres in municipal corporations and municipalities and 25 acres in other areas.
