GCC’s Mega Rs. 947 Crore Infrastructure Package for City

Funded through loans, agencies and by state govt

Chennai:Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a Rs.947-crore package of urban infrastructure projects for the current financial year for the city, with focus on improving roads and civic amenities, developing parks and schools, reclaiming land at the city’s two major dumpyards and strengthening flood mitigation infrastructure.

The package includes projects funded through a combination of the Chennai Metropolitan Infrastructure and Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM), the state government, Swachh Bharat Mission, Urban Challenge Fund, loans and German development bank KfW.

The biggest allocation, Rs.300 crore, has been earmarked for re-laying 360 km of roads across the city. The work, funded through CMIUDM and the Government of Tamil Nadu, is aimed at improving road conditions and commuter safety.

Another major component is the Rs.276-crore biomining project at the Kodungaiyur and Perungudi dumpyards. Drone surveys have identified an additional Rs. 28.70 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste at the two sites. GCC plans to scientifically clear the waste through biomining, and reclaim the land.

The project will be funded through the Swachh Bharat Mission, the state government and GCC.

The Corporation will also implement the Urban Equitable Development Scheme in select areas in its first phase at a cost of Rs. 100 crore. The scheme is intended to address gaps in essential social and urban infrastructure and promote more balanced development across the city.

An Integrated Urban Development Project covering 45 sq km across Tondiarpet, T. Nagar, Royapettah and Adyar has been allocated ₹110 crore.

The project envisages a 35-km pedestrian walkway, 15 km of safe school routes and infrastructure improvements at 105 road intersections to improve pedestrian safety and traffic movement. It will be funded through CMIUDM, the Urban Challenge Fund and loans.

GCC has also earmarked Rs. 60 crore to develop 50 new parks on open space reservation (OSR) lands, while Rs. 50 crore will be spent on constructing new, modern school buildings and additional classrooms.

Another Rs. 10 crore has been allocated to upgrade 10 sports grounds within the Corporation area.

As part of flood mitigation efforts, GCC will construct a stormwater drain along Jawaharlal Nehru Salai from the Zero Point of the Otteri nullah canal to the Cooum river at an estimated cost of Rs. 41 crore.

The project, to be implemented with assistance from German development bank KfW, is intended to reduce flooding in Villivakkam, Ambattur, Korattur, Padi and Anna Nagar West during the monsoon.
