GCC Fines 126 Bulk Waste Generators Rs 6.30 Lakh For Violating Rules

The civic body inspected 260 bulk waste generators across all 15 zones as part of the drive.

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Thursday collected a total fine of Rs 6.30 lakh from 126 commercial bulk waste generators, for violating solid waste management rules, during a special inspection drive conducted across the city.

The civic body inspected 260 bulk waste generators across all 15 zones as part of the drive. The establishments included commercial establishments and other premises generating large quantities of waste.

The inspection focused on whether waste was being segregated into four categories at source, whether adequate colour-coded bins had been installed and maintained, and whether segregated waste was being properly stored and handed over to the corporation.

The corporation said bulk waste generators had been given a six-month grace period to comply with the rules. However, many establishments were still not segregating waste at source or providing bins of adequate capacity, creating difficulties in collection and handling.

Since April 1, the corporation has been collecting waste generated by bulk waste generators free of cost, provided it is properly segregated and handed over in accordance with the rules.

The inspection teams comprised regional deputy commissioners, superintending engineers, zonal officers, executive and assistant executive engineers, health officers, sanitary inspectors and other officials.
