Chennai:More than half of the Tambaram-Mudichur road is covered with garbage near the Lakshmipuram area between Mannivakkam and Mudichur, resulting in health hazards for the residents and interfering with the movement of vehicles.
The panchayats of Mannivakkam and Mudichur are passing the buck to each other, saying that it is the responsibility of the other panchayat to clear the garbage piling up every day.
Tambaram-Mudichur road is one of the major roads in the suburbs going through Krishna Nagar, Old Perungalathur, Mudichur and Mannivakkam and joining with the Vandalur-Walajabad road. The road witnesses round-the-clock movement of vehicles and the areas on both sides of the road are seeing rapid development with the construction of houses, factories, educational institutions and shopping malls.
At Lakshmipuram, more than half of the road is covered with garbage and only 30 feet of the total 80 feet of it is available for vehicle movement. The garbage includes medical waste which is dangerous for the residents. The stench is unbearable for the residents and those who use the road. Two popular schools are located near the area and more than 5,000 students are studying in them.
When people raise a complaint with the Mudichur panchayat officials, they say the spot comes under the Mannivakkam panchayat which should remove the garbage. When Mannivakkam panchayat is approached, the officials say that people from Mudichur are dumping the waste and, so, the Mudichur panchayat should take action.
One of the officials in Mudichur panchayat said the garbage problem had become a major one for both the panchayats. He said the panchayat was removing the garbage every week but people were dumping the waste at night.
Mudichur panchayat is planning to instal CCTVs to find out who is dumping the waste. “We are also taking action to identify those who are dumping the waste and take action through police. We have also warned the people living in the apartments and the shopkeepers not to dump garbage in the area. We will find a solution to the problem soon,” he assured.
