For the first year of the expanded scheme, Rs 217.63 crore had been allotted, while the total allocation was Rs 724 crore, an official press release said on Friday.

Chennai: Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay would inaugurate the expansion of the ‘Perunthalivar Kamarajar Breakfast scheme’ that would bring 15.30 lakh students of classes six to eight in 15,454 government and government aided schools into the State-wide nutrition programme, aimed at stopping children from attending classes in an empty stomach, on Tuesday September 22.

Presiding over the review meeting for the expansion of the programme at the Secretariat on Friday, Vijay insisted on maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in the kitchens and dining areas of the schools where the nutritious breakfast would be served to the students.

For the first year of the expanded scheme, Rs 217.63 crore had been allotted, while the total allocation was Rs 724 crore, an official press release said on Friday.

The breakfast would be freshly prepared by members of the Self Help Groups, functioning under the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women (TNCDW), at 447 integrated kitchens in Chennai and 2150 similar kitchens in other parts of the State.

The TVK government decided to expand the scheme, launched by the previous government to serve breakfast to students of classes one to five, by bringing in pupils of classes 6 to 8 into the breakfast programme and also to name it after the late K Kamarj at a meeting on June 15.

The expansion of the Breakfast scheme was aimed at integrating the health, nutrition, school attendance and learning of the students to strengthen the foundation for school education, the release said, adding that the inclusion of students in Classes six to eight would help the students in their educational journey and also contribute to social development.
