Expenditure on Social Justice Hostel Inmates Gets Boost

The maintenance charges of social justice hostels for school students will be raised from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 75,000 and that of college hostels will go up from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh: Minister

Chennai: BC and MBC welfare minister V. Sampathkumar on Thursday announced an increase of food expenses for students of BC and MBC hostels, besides raising the funds for maintenance of social justice hostels.

Replying to the discussion on demand for grants for his ministry, Sampathkumar said the food expenses for each student in the school hostel would go up from Rs. 1,400 to Rs. 1,800, and for college hostels, it would be increased from Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000. This will cost an additional expense of Rs. 32 crore for the department.
The maintenance charges of social justice hostels for school students will be raised from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 75,000 and that of college hostels will go up from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh, he said.
Financial assistance of Rs. 1.5 lakh would be provided to 100 persons to open modern saloon shops, Sampathkumar said, adding a new social justice hostel would be opened in Chennai for the students of backward and most backward communities.
He announced own buildings for 14 social justice hostels, besides mosquito nets in 1,238 social justice schools and colleges, and inverter, refrigerator and water purifier facilities in 960 social justice hostels.
He also announced compound walls for 95 social justice hotels and upgradation of 29 hostels into college hostels.
