Drug Abuse, Caste Flare-Ups Could Dent Tirunelveli’s Industrial Growth: Collector

The district is also slated to get additional industrial parks at Moolaikaraipatti and Marukaalkurichi near Nanguneri, in addition to the existing Sipcot industrial estate at Gangaikondan

Tirunelveli: The growing prevalence of drug abuse among youngsters and caste related flare ups could undermine Tirunelveli’s efforts to emerge as a major industrial and renewable energy hub, Collector Anand Mohan said on Thursday.

Inaugurating an orientation meeting for media personnel and mass communication students organised by the Press Information Bureau, he said the district had considerable potential in the renewable energy sector. The presence of TP Solar, a Tata group company engaged in solar cell and panel manufacturing, and Vikram Solar would help Tirunelveli emerge as a major solar energy hub, he said.

The district is also slated to get additional industrial parks at Moolaikaraipatti and Marukaalkurichi near Nanguneri, in addition to the existing Sipcot industrial estate at Gangaikondan. These projects would provide further scope for manufacturing and attract industrial investment, the Collector said.

Expressing concern over the growing drug abuse among youngsters, Anand Mohan said it was a major impediment to the district’s industrial growth. He also called for effective measures to prevent caste related flare ups in the socially sensitive district, stressing that a peaceful law and order situation was crucial for creating a conducive environment for industrial investment.

Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Balasubramanian Shastri said the district police were taking all necessary measures to make Tirunelveli a drug free district under the Union government’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
