Dravidian Majors, TVK Bribing Voters in By-Polls: CPI MP

He also criticised the economic policies pursued by successive DMK and ADMK governments since the 1991 reforms, alleging that they favoured big corporates at the expense of workers.

Tirunelveli:The CPI's Tiruppur MP K Subbarayan has alleged that the DMK, AIADMK and ruling TVK were distributing cash to voters in the Dharapuram and Madurantakam assembly by-polls, thereby subverting democracy.

Addressing reporters on the sidelines of the 14th district conference of the AITUC here on Friday, Mr Subbarayan, also its national secretary, said the left parties had decided to field candidates against the three parties in order to build a separate left-oriented political alternative in Tamil Nadu.

Adding that the Left alliance was not a temporary arrangement, Mr Subbarayan said the dangers posed by Hindutva politics and neo-liberal economic policies required a sustained political response and hence the alliance between all the left political organisations in the state would be a long-standing arrangement.

He said the Left parties had extended support to the TVK government only to prevent an attempt to dissolve the Assembly and impose Governor's rule. However, the CPI and CPM would not extend unconditional support to the Vijay led government always, he said.

Mr Subbarayan also criticised the TVK for not clearly spelling out its economic policy and alleged that the government had been hesitant to confront the BJP. "Moreover, the TVK government too has attempted to implement some of the policies of the BJP and RSS and that made the CPI and the CPM reconsider its outside support to it," he added.

He also criticised the economic policies pursued by successive DMK and ADMK governments since the 1991 reforms, alleging that they favoured big corporates at the expense of workers. He opposed privatisation in the power sector, education and healthcare sectors and called for strengthening government institutions.

The CPI leader said the AITUC national conference, scheduled to be held from November 21 to 24, would discuss the prevailing political and economic situation and chalk out further programmes to protect the interests of workers, farmers and the public.
