DMK To Act On Its Poll Fiasco Analysis

The inaccessibility of top leaders to the rank and file of the party is reportedly citied to be one of the causes for the poll fiasco in the report submitted to Stalin at Anna Arivalayam on Wednesday by some lead members of the committee, including MPs Constantine Ravindran and Kanimozhi Karunanidh.

Chennai: Several heads in the DMK are likely to roll in the days to come as the party high command is all set to take action on the report of the 36-member committee, set up by president M K Stalin to study the reasons behind the party’s shocking debacle in the recent Assembly elections, and might go in for a total revamp of the organisation by infusing new blood into the top echelons.

Party leaderships would go through the report and take remedial measures in the party’s style of functioning and organizational flaws that had been pointed out in the report that was prepared after eliciting the views of 4.65 lakh persons associated with the party and had a ringside view of the elections.

Many respondents had complained against the district secretaries of the party for allegedly cold shouldering the views of lower level party cadre even when they had raised a red flag over a possible negative outcome in the elections, sources in the party said.

Since Stalin had urged the committee members to ensure that their report truly reflected the sentiments of those who gave their opinion on the election results, it is learnt that charges against former chief minister and DMK chief and his family members figure in the report.

As a remedial measure to the loss of popularity of the DMK, the main cause for the party’s defeat, Leader of the Opposition and party’s’ youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin might undertake a tour of the State to create a personal rapport with the people and rebuild the broken bridges.

The party would also look into the charge of rampant corruption during the DMK regime and make serious efforts at image building and to assure the people that the party would give a clean government if elected again, it is learnt.

Since another reason cited for the decline in popularity was the party's failure to catch the imagination of the youth, the revamp of the organisational structure might see new faces being entrusted with responsibilities.

On the whole, the party plans to have a full-fledged introspection of its activities and style of functioning based on the inputs of the respondents and think about ways to regain the confidence of the people and establish the DMK as the party worthy of ruling the State.
