Chennai: DMK legislators wore black shirts on Thursday ahead of the presentation of the Tamil Nadu Agriculture Budget in the State Assembly.
On Wednesday, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin criticised the maiden budget of the TVK-led government, calling it a "waste" and accusing it of lacking original ideas.
Stalin said the budget, which some had expected to be a "blast", turned out to be a "total waste" and alleged that it was merely a "remake version" of schemes introduced by the previous DMK government.
In a post on X, he said the "reel government's" first budget failed to deliver on its promises and did not adequately address issues affecting farmers or the rising cost of living.
Former Tamil Nadu Finance Minister and DMK MLA Thangam Thennarasu also criticised the budget, saying it failed to meet public expectations.
He alleged that figures in the government's white paper on the state's finances contradicted the budget documents and claimed the government was on a borrowing spree.
Thennarasu said the state's net borrowing now stood at Rs 22,000 crore and warned that, if the trend continued, Tamil Nadu's debt could reach Rs 20 lakh crore by the end of the government's five-year term.
On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Marie Wilson presented the 2026-27 state budget, outlining a roadmap to transform Tamil Nadu into a USD 1.5 trillion economy by 2031.
The budget allocated Rs 300 crore to modernise 3,734 government schools and Rs 139 crore for the first phase of the "Super Clean, Super Campus" initiative, which aims to improve hygiene, security and maintenance in 10,000 schools.
The Finance Minister also announced the "Vetri Laptop Scheme", under which college students will receive laptops to support digital learning and improve access to academic resources.
