DMK, AIADMK Tambaram Councillors Flag Corpn Inaction

CHENNAI:Councillors belonging to the DMK and AIADMK came out with charges of inaction by the Tambaram Corporation in providing drinking water, controlling the dog population and completion of drainage projects, at the Corporation council meeting on Tuesday.

The meeting of the Tambaram Corporation was held under the lead of Mayor Vasanthakumari and 344 resolutions were passed. The councillors alleged that no action was taken to solve the problems of the people in the last four-and-a-half years.

Though the Corporation is governed by the DMK, its councillors, too, joined the AIADMK members in lashing out at the functioning of the Corporation. There are announcements claiming allocation of money for sterilising the street dogs but the number of roaming dogs is going up every day since no action has been taken on the ground to control the dog population, they said.

Though the Corporation collects drinking water tax, it does not provide drinking water to the residents, they charged.

Most of the councillors pointed out that the government had allocated Rs. 750 crore for the expansion of the drainage scheme, but the work had not been started till now. Another major complaint was about the condition of the stormwater drains which are broken or encroached at most places. The members urged the Corporation to renovate the stormwater drains before the northeast monsoon season to prevent inundation of residential areas.

The members said the primary health centre at ward 51 did not have enough stock of medicines and tablets and the doctors were absent most of the time. Those coming to the primary health centres are asked to take tests, including blood tests, from other laboratories since they do have facilities for diagnosis.

Alleging that no funds were allotted for civic works in their wards, the AIADMK councillors walked out of the meeting.
