Despite Dry Cauvery, People Refuse to Give up Aadi Perukku Rituals

THANJAVUR: Aadi Perukku became a low-key affair this year in Thanjavur district as there was no water flow in the rivers.
However, people celebrated using spring water in river beds, wells and borewell water.
Aadi Perukku is celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi (August 3 this year) to welcome fresh water in the Cauvery and worship Mother Cauvery.
As water was not released from Mettur dam, Cauvery and its branches remained dry. Hence, people had to satisfy themselves using spring water, stagnant water in rivers, wells in houses, vessels filled with water, water bottles and tap water.
People visited Bushya ghat in the Cauvery at Thiruvaiyaru, Sakkara and Bhagavat ghats at Kumbakonam, Cauvery ghat at Swamimalai and offered worship to Mother Cauvery. People also visited GA canal near Big Temple and the Vennar in Thanjavur.
Newly-wed women tied new mangalya threads.
Thiruvaiyaru town panchayat made a shower arrangement in the Cauvery ghat and children enjoyed taking bath in the shower.
