Coimbatore: A dramatic 40-km police chase ended with the arrest of a group of alleged smugglers after a policeman reportedly climbed onto the roof of their moving car to prevent them from escaping.
The incident took place on Sunday morning after Kovilpalayam police received information about the movement of a suspicious car in the Vilankurichi area. A police team immediately set out in pursuit as the vehicle headed towards Avinashi.
As the chase continued, police managed to close in on the car. In a risky move, one of the policemen reportedly climbed onto its roof while it was still moving. He remained there for several kilometres, apparently trying to stop the occupants from evading the police team.
The pursuit stretched for nearly 40km before the police finally intercepted the vehicle on Avinashi Road. The occupants were overpowered and taken into custody.
Police are questioning the arrested persons to establish their identities and determine their alleged involvement in smuggling activities. Further details about the material being smuggled were not immediately available.
The incident drew attention because of the policeman’s reported attempt to stop the suspects while the vehicle was still in motion.
