Coonoor Woman Physicist Gets Prestigious German Fellowship

She is currently pursuing frontier research at the intersection of quantum materials, two-dimensional (2D) platforms, and molecular electronics.

Ooty: Dr. Anu Roshini Ramakrishnan, a physicist from Coonoor town in the Nilgiris, was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship, one of Germany’s most prestigious and highly competitive international research fellowships for outstanding researchers worldwide. The fellowship recognises scientists who demonstrate exceptional research achievements, academic excellence, and the potential to make significant contributions in their respective fields.

A proud alumna of St. Joseph’s Convent Anglo-Indian Girls’ Higher Secondary School at Coonoor, Dr. Anu Roshini completed her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Physics from PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore.

She later embarked on a research career that took her from the Nilgiris to some of India’s and Germany’s leading research institutions, reflecting her dedication, curiosity and passion for scientific discovery.

She joined the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in March 2026, where she is currently pursuing frontier research at the intersection of quantum materials, two-dimensional (2D) platforms, and molecular electronics.

It is pertinent to note that quantum physics is the branch of science that studies the behaviour of matter and light at the atomic and subatomic levels.

At the University of Stuttgart, Dr. Anu Roshini is developing 2D material-based platforms for the electrical readout of molecular qubits, an emerging research direction in quantum technology. Her work aims to bridge molecular quantum systems with scalable electronic architectures, paving the way for future advances in quantum information processing and molecular-scale electronics.

Prior to joining the University of Stuttgart, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, where she conducted research on advanced low-dimensional materials, including transition metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, graphene, and semiconductor nanostructures.

Her research contributions include the development of nanomaterial-based device platforms for applications in sensing, nanoelectronics, optoelectronics and energy technologies.

She received her Ph.D. in Physics from Bits Pilani, where she investigated semiconductor nanomaterials and their optoelectronic properties, establishing the foundation for her continued research in 2D materials and quantum technologies.

Awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the fellowship provides exceptional researchers from across the world an opportunity to conduct independent research in collaboration with leading German institutions.

It is internationally regarded as a mark of scientific excellence and has supported researchers who have made significant contributions across diverse fields of science and technology.

Her achievement highlights the growing contributions of Indian researchers to frontier areas of nanoscience and quantum technology while strengthening scientific collaboration between India and Germany.

Dr. Anu Roshini also hopes that her journey will inspire more young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Stem). She believes that greater representation of women in scientific research brings diverse perspectives and innovative approaches to addressing complex challenges in science and technology.

Through her work, she aims to encourage aspiring researchers, especially young women, to pursue excellence and contribute to the advancement of science.
