Coonoor Tea Board Officials Inspect Tea Production Units

During these inspections, 513 tea samples were collected and sent for detailed laboratory analysis to verify compliance with the safety parameters.

Ooty: The Tea Board of India zonal office at Coonoor has conducted inspections in establishments connected with tea production to ensure regulatory compliance and to step up measures to improve the quality of tea being produced in south India.

M. Bharani Kumar, executive director of the Tea Board, stated that the zonal office has been implementing various schemes under the Tea Development and Promotion Scheme (TDPS) under activities such as self-help groups /farmers producer organizations (FPO), welfare schemes and training and workshops.

The Tea Board is making efforts to ensure higher price for the made-tea in the market and remunerative price for the green leaf supplied to the factories by these small farmers/growers. During the past month two FPOs, 261 wards of small tea growers and garden workers benefited from the educational stipend and 16 small tea growers availed assistance from the schedule caste sub plans funds.

The zonal office is continuing its sustained drive during August 2026 to ensure regulatory compliance, quality adherence, and fair pricing mechanisms across the South India tea sector. To uphold quality standards and safeguard consumer health, the officials from the Tea Board carried out 86 field inspections across various tea sector establishments including tea manufacturing units, warehouses, buyer premises, export-oriented units and retail outlets.

During these inspections, 513 tea samples were collected and sent for detailed laboratory analysis to verify compliance with the safety parameters.

Periodical inspections at various tea factories across southern zone including estate factories are being undertaken to monitor the compliance of quality and hygiene standards set by the Tea Board. In a major step to ensure quality compliance and consumer safety, the registration certificate, control order, and tea waste licence control order of an instant tea manufacturing unit was cancelled by the zonal office in Coonoor, he stated.
