CM Vijay Inaugurates Aavin Lab Annexe at Madhavaram

Vijay inspected the operational activities of the existing Madhavaram dairy plant and reviewed ongoing construction work on an upcoming modern dairy facility

CHENNAI: Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated new additional building of the Aavin State Central Laboratory at Madhavaram, built at a cost of Rs. 2.23 crore by the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation.

During the visit on Wednesday, he also inspected the operational activities of the existing Madhavaram dairy plant and reviewed ongoing construction work on an upcoming modern dairy facility.

The new laboratory annexe is equipped with advanced testing instruments to conduct drinking water testing in accordance with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) norms, as well as wastewater and effluent testing in compliance with Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) regulations.

Designed to serve the requirements of both the federation and district cooperative milk unions, the facility enables rapid, highly accurate quality testing aligned with international standards.

Originally established in 1963 as a joint venture between the government and Unicef with a daily capacity of 50,000 litres, the Madhavaram dairy facility has undergone phased modernisation over the years to achieve its current processing capacity of 4.5 lakh litres per day.

The Chief Minister observed the daily milk handling operations and distribution logistics, which deploy an average of 120 vehicles each day to supply milk across north Chennai.

To cater to Chennai’s growing demand, a fully automated, state-of-the-art modern dairy plant, with an enhanced handling capacity of 7 lakh litres per day, is currently under construction at Madhavaram at an estimated cost of `152.26 crore.

Inspecting the site, Vijay reviewed project milestones with department officials and directed them to expedite the remaining works to ensure timely completion.

The event was attended by minister for dairy development Vijayalakshmi; MLAs M. L. Vijay Prabhu and N. Senthil Kumar; chairman of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board V. Siva; secretary of animal husbandry, dairying, fisheries and fishermen welfare Anu George; director of dairy development and managing director of Aavin S.
