Chennai: Demanding immediate intervention to protect the rights and free movement of Scheduled Caste residents, a representation has been submitted to Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay seeking the removal of a wall allegedly obstructing access and affecting the livelihood of residents of Saman Nagar in Valipatti village, Salem district.
S. Karuppaiah, founder and state president of the Central and State SC/ST Government Employees and People’s Federation, urged the Chief Minister to direct the district administration to conduct an immediate on-the-spot inspection and take prompt action if the wall was found to obstruct a public pathway or violate the rights of residents.
The representation said the wall had been erected in an area inhabited by Scheduled Caste people and was reportedly causing difficulties to their free movement and livelihood.
Mr Karuppaiah also sought an inquiry into allegations of caste-based discrimination or untouchability. If such practices were established, he called for action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and other applicable laws.
He urged the authorities to ensure that members of the Scheduled Caste community could live without fear and enjoy equal rights.
