CM Stalin Wonders If India Was Sliding Towards Dictatorship

Chennai: Wondering if India was sliding towards dictatorship, Chief Minister M K Stalin raised a red flag over a looming ‘delimitation danger’ and warned the Union Government against turning ‘a gentle breeze in the South into a storm.'

Raising a series of questions on the delimitation process to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, Stalin, in his X message, asked why the Union BJP government kept the entire delimitation process under wraps without transparently announcing how it intended to conduct it.

He wanted to know what Modi’s reaction was to the demand placed by the southern States that he should follow the footsteps of former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, who deferred delimitation for 25 years in 2001, and what was the urgent need to convene a special session of Parliament right in the middle of elections in five States.

Stalin said that the fair opinion of opposition leaders that the special session should be convened only after April 29 was ignored and that the attempt to carry out highly important Constitutional amendments was being made without convening an all-party meeting for consultation.

The DMK would not stand idle, watching the Union BJP government undermining the rights of the southern States and empowering the north for it concerned the future of the people living in the south, who would not agree to any decision taken on it without their consent and even without talking to them about it, come what may, he said.

That the Union Government’s move to bring in the amendment without calling for an all-party meeting and convening the Parliament session in a hurry without waiting for the State elections to be over pointed to the country sliding towards dictatorship, he warned.
