Chennai to Get 11 Air-Conditioned Bus Shelters
The initiative is aimed at improving infrastructure and providing commuters with safer and more comfortable waiting facilities, particularly during Chennai's extreme weather conditions.
Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will set up 11 air-conditioned bus shelters equipped with modern passenger amenities at key locations across the city as part of a pilot initiative funded through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions.
Memoranda of Understanding for the project were signed with contributing organisations on Tuesday in the presence of Corporation Commissioner Dr. G.S. Sameeran and Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Dr A. Amalraj at Ripon Buildings.

The air-conditioned bus shelters will be established at locations supported by organisations including Apollo Hospitals, Kauvery Hospital, Guru Nanak College, SIMS Hospital, Rohini Hotels, SRM Prime Hospital and Freyer International Logistics.
Apollo Hospitals will support shelters at DMS on Anna Salai in Teynampet and the Mylapore bus stop, while Kauvery Hospital will establish one on Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Vadapalani.
Guru Nanak College will support the facility at Vijayanagar bus terminus in Velachery.
SIMS Hospital will establish two shelters near Vadapalani bus stop, catering to commuters travelling towards and away from the hospital.
Other locations include Chinnamalai in Guindy, supported by Rohini Hotels; Avichi School on Arcot Road and Alandur Metro, supported by SRM Prime Hospital; and the northern and southern sides of the Egmore area in Royapuram zone, supported by Freyer International Logistics.
Each shelter will include an air-conditioned waiting hall, CCTV surveillance, Wi-Fi connectivity, accessible ramps integrated with footpaths where possible, bus route information, lighting and USB charging points.
The facilities will also feature heat-resistant PUF-panel roofing and toughened or laminated safety glass.
The Corporation said the 11 shelters were being developed as a pilot project and similar air-conditioned bus stops would be considered at other locations across Chennai based on requirements and the availability of CSR funding.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr. P. Chamundeeswari, Joint Commissioner (Works) C. Saravanan, Chief Engineer (General) P. Sankaravelu, Superintending Engineer (Bus Routes) M. Pazhani, representatives of contributing organisations and Corporation officials were present at the MoU-signing event.
