Chennai: Sewage Mixes with Rainwater, Overflows on GST Road
Residents said the overflowing water entered some houses in low-lying areas, despite a moderate rainfall

CHENNAI: Motorists and residents underwent a harrowing ordeal after sewage mixed with rainwater and overflowed onto the GST Road in Chromepet following about 30 minutes of moderate rain in Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram and surrounding areas on Friday evening.
The stretch near the junction of GST Road and Kamarajar Nagar–Rathinam Road was particularly affected, making it difficult for schoolchildren, pedestrians and two-wheeler riders to navigate the stretch.
Residents said the overflowing water entered some houses in low-lying areas, despite a moderate rainfall. They said some apartment complexes and industrial establishments in the vicinity allegedly release sewage into the stormwater drains whenever it rains, resulting in sewage mixing with rainwater and overflowing onto the roads. This practice had led to foul-smelling sewage water accumulating on the roads and entering low-lying houses.
Though they had complained multiple times to the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation about discharge of sewage into stormwater drains, no effective action had been taken to prevent it. They urged the civic body to identify the culprits, take action against them and ensure that the stormwater drainage network is used only for carrying rainwater.
