CHENNAI: Severing its 9-year-old association with the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance on Saturday with a resolve to decide on the future coalition only during the next election, the MDMK accused the DMK of making behind the screen efforts to enthrone the AIADMK in the seat of power through that party had forged a tie-up with communal Hindutva forces for the elections and won just 47 seats.
After passing 23 resolutions, one of them praising the newly formed TVK government, at the 32nd general council meeting of the party in Chennai on Saturday, MDMK general secretary Vaiko told the media that his party was ill-treated by the DMK and was even forced it’s candidates to contest the Assembly election under the DMK symbol.

Taking a strong stand against Karnataka for its bid to construct a dam across River Cauvery at Mekedatu, the general council said the demand for a separate tribunal to adjudicate on the issue would turn out to be an advantage for the neighbouring State since Tamil Nadu consistent stand had been that the dam should not be built at all.
Welcoming the TVK government’s decision to stick to the two-language system in State schools, the MDMK urged the government to fight and secure the educational funds that had been withheld by the Union Government.
Placing a demand for total prohibition in the State, the MDMK praised the TVK government for closing down 717 liquor shops after coming to power but wanted the bar licenses issued during the earlier government to be revoked.
It also welcomed the efforts taken by the new government to prevent the diversion of funds, earned through the sales of liquor, beer and wine, to private hands and channelling them to the State treasury to enable the government to make an additional revenue of Rs 1,000 crore annually.
The MDMK demanded a proper enquiry into the series of scams relating to question paper leaks in the entrance exams conducted for various courses, including NEET, and said that the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should be sacked.
