Six And City: Will Wishes Be Realized?

All that Chennaiites can wish for basic improvements in their city to have better living in Chennai.

As the new year unfolds, this columnist presents six wishes for Chennai and Chennaiites, looking ahead with cautious optimism.

Water security: Managing the reservoirs in a proper manner and maintaining water bodies by regularly removing encroachments and water hyacinths will help ensure water supply throughout the year. Strict enforcement of rainwater harvesting can also make a significant difference.

Cleaner air: Though Chennai's air quality is usually better than other cities due to sea breeze, it worsens during festivals like Deepavali and in December and January. Sometimes, rain helps clear smog the day after Deepavali. Perungudi and Kodungaiyur see severe pollution spikes and in some areas like Manali and Ennore dust pollution remains a concern. Also, respiratory issues keep going up due to pollution and vehicle fumes on roads. Using public transport, carpooling and turning off idling engines besides improving infrastructure will help tackle rising pollution.

Smart monsoon management: Concerted efforts must be made to ensure all stormwater drains across the city are functioning effectively so that heavy rains bring relief, not floods, to homes, roads and schools.

Greener city: Amid rapid urbanization, it is essential to sustain Chennai’s green lungs to ensure vital oxygen, shade and cooling. These places not only serve as natural air purifiers but also recreational hubs, while fighting the city’s concrete growth and pollution.

Seamless public transport: with smoother traffic will help connect people without congestion. Expanded metro rail coverage and improved bus services coupled with safer roads for motorists and pedestrians matter most.

Stray dog threat: With dog bite cases triggering fear among the public, the administration must continue its efforts to rein in the dog menace.
