Both July 18 And Nov 1 Important For TN: CM
PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss also urged the new TVK government to not follow the date fixed by the DMK government under M K Stalin in 2022 but observe Tamil Nadu Day on November 1 when the Madras State came into existence through the carving out of the Tamil speaking regions of the erstwhile multi-lingual Madras Presidency.

Chennai: Conveying his greetings to the people on ‘Tamil Nadu Day’ on Saturday that marks the anniversary of the State getting its present name, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced that the State would also celebrate the formation of the Madras State on November 1, striking a balance between the two camps that were pulling at different directions on the celebration of Tamil Nadu Day.
Earlier when the State government announced the celebration of ‘Tamil Nadu Day’ on July 18 through the organization of several competitions for school students, the naysayers rose in protest to point out that July 18 was only the date on which the then DMK government headed by C N Annadurai took the initiative to give the name ‘Tamil Nadu’ to the State.
Putting an end to the dispute between those advocating the celebration of Madras Day on the date in which Madras State, the precursor of Tamil Nadu, was formed and those wanting to mark the date on which the Annadurai government took the initiative to give the name ‘Tamil Nadu’, Vijay said both days would be celebrated in the State.
Taking pledge to elevate Tamil Nadu to the Number One position in the country, Vijay described the State as the home of the classical language that witnessed the thriving of the Sangam Period of Tamil literature and nurtured equality and social justice besides excelling in education, technology and human resources.
Remembering the martyrs who strove for the formation of Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister wished for the flourishing of the mellifluous Tamil language and the continuation of the Tamil people’s lofty virtues and traditions across generations.
Today is TN Day, avers M K Stalin
Averring that July 18 was Tamil Nadu Day since it marks the day in which DMK founder, C N Annadurai, rechristened the State by raising the slogan ‘Long live Tamil Nadu’ in the Legislative Assembly evoking a collective raising of the same slogan by the members, former Chief Minister M K Stalin said that since 1956 when the States were reorganized on the basis of language Tamil Nadu was called Madras State.
None of the several attempts made to bring about the name change and a plethora of resolutions passed to that effect fructified when the DMK government that came to power in 1967 achieved it on the red lettered day, he said in a social media message.
