Chennai: The BJP was firm on the consistent and responsible position taken by the Union Government and the Ministry of Jal Shakti on the Mekedatu project, whose detailed project report could not be considered for assessment without the acceptance/clearance of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), the party spokesman Narayanan Thirupathy said.
The recent clarification given by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti in Parliament only restated the legal position emerging from the Supreme Court’s 16 February 2018 judgment that did not expressly mandate prior consent of other riparian states for constructing a structure within Karnataka’s territory, he said in a statement on Tuesday.
However, that did not mean that the project could proceed unilaterally or in violation of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal Award as modified by the Supreme Court, he said.
