Group of Educational Institutions, and the Sustainable Development Council (SDC) have launched 'Project ray: Sustainable streetlight mission) at Kudamulla tribal hamlet in remote western Nilgiris.
Proposed by Seerakku, SDC’s environmental and sustainability unit, the initiative completed its first phase with the installation of 20 solar-powered street lights in Kudamulla hamlet, home to 120 tribal families. The settlement previously had only four streetlights, leaving several pathways inadequately illuminated after dark and making it difficult for residents to detect the presence of wild animals nearby.
Located in an area characterised by wildlife movement near Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Kudamulla requires particular attention to visibility and safety along
its internal pathways and access routes. The installations prioritise village entry and exit points, pedestrian routes, areas adjoining forest boundaries and pathways commonly used by schoolchildren.
