VS Achuthanandan: A Legacy of Struggle and Justice Now Lives in Memory
VS Achuthanandan remained a symbol of unwavering communist principles, social justice, and dedication to the working class

Former Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan.
The name VS Achuthanandan is etched in the history of Kerala as a symbol of struggle and resilience. A veteran Indian communist leader, freedom fighter, and the only surviving founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI(M), from Kerala passed away at the age of 101.
Born on October 20, 1923, in Velikathu, Punnaprayag, to Sankaran and Akkamma, VS began his political journey at the age of 15 with the Congress Socialist Party and later joined the Communist movement in 1940. Throughout his life, he was deeply involved in organizing strikes among agricultural and coir workers and played a notable role in the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising. His commitment to the Left movement saw him serve as Alappuzha Division Secretary, District Secretary, and a member of the CPI National Committee. In 1964, due to ideological differences regarding cooperation with the Congress, he co-founded the CPI(M).
VS served as Kerala’s 11th Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011, assuming office at the age of 82. His administration prioritized welfare, anti-corruption, and environmental protection. Notable achievements during his tenure included significant infrastructure developments such as Vallarpadam Port, the expansion of TechnoPark, and the establishment of IT parks. He also took a strong stance against film piracy and illegal lotteries, and notably led demolition drives in Munnar and Kochi to reclaim illegally occupied land.
Following the Left Front's return to power in 2016, VS was appointed Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission with cabinet rank, a role he held until 2021. He also served as Leader of the Opposition multiple times and was the CPI(M) state secretary from 1980 to 1992. His political rivalry with Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted deeper ideological divisions within the party.
Celebrating his 100th birthday in October 2022, VS Achuthanandan remained a symbol of unwavering communist principles, social justice, and dedication to the working class. He was hospitalized on June 23 after suffering a heart attack, having been in declining health for some time. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations committed to the ideals he championed throughout his remarkable life.
Achuthanandan is survived by his wife, K. Vasumathy; daughter, V.V. Asha; and son, V.A. Arun Kumar.
