Trekkers Rescued After Getting Lost on Hill in Wayanad

Wayanad: Two youngsters who lost their way while trekking at Ponmudikotta hill near Ambalavayal in this hill district were rescued following a joint search operation by the police and Fire and Rescue Services, officials said on Monday.According to officials at the Sulthan Bathery Fire Station, Mubashir and Mohammed Mundhir, both natives of Kalloor, had trekked to Ponmudikotta hill on Sunday afternoon.

While descending from the other side of the hill, they lost their way. As darkness fell, the duo attempted to return to the peak but became further disoriented.

Officials said mobile phone connectivity was restored around 7 pm, enabling the youngsters to contact the Fire and Rescue Services and seek help.

Soon after receiving the distress call, Fire and Rescue Services alerted the Ambalavayal police, and a joint search operation involving local residents was launched.

After nearly two-and-a-half hours of search, the youngsters were traced around 9.45 pm and brought safely to Ambalavayal, officials said.

They were found in an area where wild animals are frequently sighted, officials added.

Ponmudikotta hill is a popular trekking destination that attracts visitors from different parts of Kerala, officials said.
