Devaswom Board Announces Rs 2 Lakh Insurance Cover for Sabarimala Pilgrims

Jayakumar announced a new life insurance scheme in association with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), under which the families of pilgrims who die at Sabarimala during the pilgrimage season would receive compensation of Rs 2 lakh each

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) will introduce a new insurance scheme through the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) for devotees undertaking the Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage to the Sabarimala temple.

Announcing the scheme, TDB president K. Jayakumar on Friday said families of devotees who die at Sabarimala during the pilgrimage period would receive an insurance cover of `2 lakh each, with the board bearing the entire premium.

Jayakumar said infrastructure development works and other arrangements for the Mandala season were progressing steadily. As part of these efforts, the TDB would enhance the services of its two petrol pumps. Special reception desks will also be set up at Nilakkal and Pampa for the convenience of pilgrims.

The TDB president added that a control board should first be established at the Devaswom Board headquarters, though he had no objection to setting up such facilities at other locations. Any complaints regarding wages for staff would be looked into and resolved.

Jaykumar announced that an extensive free food distribution (annadanam) will be organised at Erumeli this season, using the KIIFB building for the purpose.
