THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two sisters from Kottayam, Kerala, who died by suicide in Kanyakumari, had sent two messages to their parents and another sister, hinting at their plan.
Annie Philip, 35, and Meera Philip, 32, originally from Kidangoor in Kottayam district and living in the United States, reportedly jumped into the sea at Vavathurai, Kanyakumari, on April 26. Police said that before leaving their hotel room, the sisters left one phone behind and took the other with them.
Two emails were found on the phone left in the room. In one message to their family, they said they were leaving the world happily, thanked their parents for their sacrifices, and ended with an apology to the family.
The police also discovered another email from Meera Philip with the subject line “Bye.” In it, she stated that everything in the US had been taken care of and there was no need to contact or report to anyone there.
She also shared their final wish to be cremated in Kanyakumari, with their ashes scattered in the sea, adding in bold, colored letters, “No rituals or ceremonies. Please honour our wish.”
The Kanyakumari police mentioned they are attempting to recover another phone believed to have been thrown into the sea by the sisters.
The tragic incident
Police said the sisters checked into a seaside hotel on April 24 after arriving from Rameswaram. CCTV later captured them walking along the Vavathurai pier on April 26, but they never returned. When hotel staff noticed their absence, they called the family using the contact details left at reception. After the family raised the alarm, Tamil Nadu police filed a missing persons report and began investigating. On Thursday, the sisters’ bodies were found washed ashore at Vavathurai. Both had been living in Austin, Texas. The bodies were taken to Asaripallam Medical College Hospital for a postmortem.
