PM Modi To Commission Vizhinjam Seaport On May 2
More than 260 ships have already berthed at the port, including the world’s largest vessels, MSC Turkey and MSC's Cloud Gerardet.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has informed the port authorities about his schedule. The operations at Vizhinjam port began for commercial purposes in December of last year.
The commissioning comes at a time when there is a record cargo movement taking place at the port. Since the start of commercial operations in December, numerous large cargo ships, including motherships, have arrived at the Vizhinjam port; however, the official dedication ceremony was scheduled according to the Prime Minister's convenience.
The port has welcomed over 250 vessels and has handled more than 500,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of containers. This dream project for Kerala is being dedicated to the nation amidst rapid progress. Since the movement of goods began, Vizhinjam has achieved record levels, handling over 100,000 containers each month.
This success can be attributed to the port’s implementation of the country’s first automated and semi-automated crane system. More than 260 ships have already berthed at the port, including the world’s largest vessels, MSC Turkey and MSC's Cloud Gerardet. Last month alone, 53 ships were berthed in Vizhinjam.
