News Reporting in Kerala Becoming Unethical: Kerala CM Satheesan
He said that it was unfortunate to see mainstream media going in the direction of a new culture of generating credit ratings, as being done by some channels or media houses
Kollam: Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Tuesday alleged that news reporting in the state was becoming "unethical to the core".
Satheesan, speaking at an event organised by the Senior Journalists Forum Kerala (SJFK), said that both the media and the public representatives were hesitant to have personal relations with each other now, unlike in the past, and termed it unfortunate.
At the same time, he also said that there was a need to introspect on the direction being taken by news media in Kerala.
"Where is the media going in Kerala? The time to think on this is long overdue because it is heading in the direction of being unethical to the core. In the past, if wrong news was given by a publication, within 24 hours it would publish an apology or retraction".
"Now, they do not even withdraw the wrong news report. Instead, they try to substantiate it with more lies despite knowing it was incorrect," he claimed.
Satheesan further claimed that when there is nothing worth reporting, news is created and spread.
"When I see some news reports, it makes me laugh. The people of Kerala are more discerning, and they laugh by making fun of such reports. Please keep that in mind," he said.
The CM further said that he was not referring to criticism of political leaders or the government, but when journalism goes beyond that, then the profession loses its credibility.
He also said that it was unfortunate to see mainstream media going in the direction of a new culture of generating credit ratings, as being done by some channels or media houses.
He urged that senior journalists should show the correct way of news reporting to others.
