Modi Pens Letter to BJP Mayor, Hails Historic Win in Thiruvananthapuram

Prime Minister described the BJP’s victory as an end to the fixed match between the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF)

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the people of Kerala, especially the youth and women, are ready for a new dawn.

The prime minister shared these sentiments in a letter to Thiruvananthapuram’s newly elected BJP Mayor V. V. Rajesh and Deputy Mayor Asha G. Nath, noting that the BJP-NDA is becoming the people’s choice—rooted in inclusive nationalism, development without corruption, and governance without appeasement.

Modi expressed hope that the new leadership would draw inspiration from great social reformers like Sree Narayana Guru, Mahatma Ayyankali, and Mannathu Padmanabhan.

Criticizing the LDF and UDF for years of poor governance, corruption, and violence, he praised BJP workers for fearlessly championing the people’s aspirations despite challenges.

Calling the political rivalry between LDF and UDF a “fixed match” set to end, he said the BJP’s vision for a developed Thiruvananthapuram has resonated across communities, with people recognising the government’s efforts in urban development nationwide. He expressed gratitude to the city’s residents for their warmth and support.

While the BJP’s win in Thiruvananthapuram, ending the CPM’s 40-year rule in the city corporation, is noteworthy, the party’s overall showing in the local body polls fell short. The BJP-led front’s vote share dropped to 14.76 per cent from the 19.26 per cent it secured in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The Union Home Minister had tasked the state unit with achieving a 25 per cent vote share, but the weak performance dashed hopes of emerging as a viable alternative to both the LDF and UDF. The local body poll results suggest that people in the state still see the Congress-led UDF as the main alternative to the ruling LDF.
