Man Charred to Death After Running Car Catches Fire in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: A man was charred to death after a running car caught fire at Venganoor here early on Monday, police said. The incident occurred around 5 am when the running car suddenly caught fire near Mahatma Ayyankali Smarakam in Venganoor, they added.

An autorickshaw driver who witnessed the car catching fire, accompanied by a minor explosion, alerted the police, following which Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot.

Though the fire was doused, the car was completely gutted, and the man inside was found dead, officials said.

Even though Police intially could not identify the person, as the body and the car were fully charred, police checked the CCTV cameras in the area to identify the registration number of the vehicle, officials said,

Based on the investigation, the car was found to be registered in the name of Titus Kurian of Thelakom, Kottayam.

Further probe confirmed that the body was that of Kurian.

Police said that Kurian, after quarrelling with his family members, left the house on Sunday night.

Police are also probing the possible suicide angle and checking for the presence of any inflammable materials in the vehicle that caught fire.

The body was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and will be handed over to relatives after postmortem.
