Kollam School Electrocution Incident

Thousands bid farewell to Mithun: Reports

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thousands gathered to bid a tearful goodbye to Mithun, 13, who tragically lost his life after being electrocuted by a low-hanging overhead electric line at Thevalakkara Boys' School in Kollam district.

Mithun's body was cremated in the compound of his home, with his younger brother Sujin lighting the pyre. Their mother, Suja who had been working as a house help in Kuwait, was away in Turkey with her employers when the devastating news reached her.

Heartbreaking scenes unfolded as Suja, who arrived in Kochi on Saturday morning, said goodbye to her son for the last time. She had left for Kuwait to work as a house help only three months ago to secure the children's future.

Earlier, hundreds of people stood in a long queue outside Thevalakkara Boys' High School to pay homage to Mithun, whose body was kept in the school premises for public viewing. His classmates, schoolmates, teachers, staff and residents paid their last respects.

The electrocution incident, which took place on Thursday, sparked public outrage against the negligence of the school management controlled by the CPI(M).

Students and youth affiliated with various organisations took to the streets, demanding action against those responsible for the lapse. Education Minister V Sivankutty directed the management to ensure accountability for the lapse. Amid the ongoing protests, the school's headmistress S Suja, was placed under suspension.
