Kerala Receives 181 per Cent Excess Rain in First Four Days of August

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala received 205.8 mm of rainfall between August 1 and 4, nearly three times the normal 73.2 mm, recording an excess of 181 per cent, according to official data released on Tuesday.

The heavy rain continued to affect several parts of the state, with many districts receiving more than double their normal rainfall.

Pathanamthitta recorded the highest departure from normal rainfall, receiving 275.5 mm against its normal of 49.7 mm, an excess of 454 per cent.

Thiruvananthapuram followed with a 391 per cent surplus, recording 121.8 mm against the normal 24.8 mm, while Kozhikode registered 290.1 mm of rain, 274 per cent above normal.

Kollam received 130.6 mm of rainfall, recording a surplus of 245 per cent, followed by Malappuram at 227 mm (235 per cent excess) and Kottayam at 209.3 mm (234 per cent excess).

Kannur recorded 274.4 mm of rainfall, 179 per cent above normal, while Ernakulam received 192.8 mm (180 per cent excess).

Alappuzha recorded a surplus of 175 per cent with 139.2 mm of rain, Thrissur 162 per cent with 189.6 mm, and Palakkad 188 per cent with 174.3 mm.

Idukki received 229.2 mm of rainfall, 110 per cent above normal.

Kasaragod recorded 205.3 mm, an excess of 80 per cent, while Wayanad received 171.2 mm, 57 per cent above its normal rainfall.

The Union Territory of Mahe also witnessed heavy rain, recording 201.2 mm against the normal 81.1 mm, an excess of 148 per cent.

The figures underline the widespread nature of the intense monsoon spell that has battered Kerala during the first four days of August.
