Thiruvananthapuram: Police on Sunday arrested four persons for allegedly extorting over Rs 5 crore from a Telangana-based businessman by threatening to expose an alleged relationship and falsely claiming that he had fathered a child, officials said.

Those arrested were identified as Roshini and her associates Unnimol, Abhishek and Jibin, all natives of Neyyattinkara.

According to police, Roshini had befriended the businessman several years ago.

Police said that in June 2023, after giving birth to a child, Roshini contacted the victim, claimed that he was the child's father and allegedly began demanding money from him, according to PTI.

The businessman, who is married and has a child, allegedly yielded to the demands and paid her around `1.8 crore.

Police said he was later allegedly coerced into purchasing an apartment worth `1.2 crore, 45 sovereigns of gold ornaments and land worth `1.3 crore in Roshini's name in Thiruvananthapuram district.

The accused allegedly coerced him into transferring a 50 per cent stake in his company to Roshini, police said.

Recently, the accused allegedly sent messages to the businessman's wife claiming that Roshini was in a relationship with him and that he was the father of her child.

Police said Roshini then demanded that the businessman transfer the remaining 50 per cent stake in his company to her.

Following repeated threats, the businessman lodged a complaint with the Vanchiyoor police, which registered a case of extortion and launched an investigation. All four accused were arrested and later produced before a court, which remanded them in judicial custody,
