Kerala cops go berserk, beat up 3 members of family including a woman

The natives of Erumely, who had returned from the wedding ceremony, stopped the vehicle on the roadside for rest

Thiruvananthapuram: Three members of a family including a woman were brutally beaten up by police in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala on Tuesday night triggering public outrage.

The incident occurred at Pathanamthitta at 11 PM. The natives of Erumely, who had returned from the wedding ceremony, stopped the vehicle on the roadside for rest.
There was a 20-member team inside the vehicle. Suddenly a police team led by a sub inspector arrived at the spot and started beating up the family members. Sithara, sustained a fracture to her shoulder bone, and injuries to her leg and her husband had injuries on his head while other members of her family including Ajay, Shijin, Ajith were also injured in the police assault.
Meanwhile, the public outrage over the incident forced top cops to initiate disciplinary action against SI Jinu who was transferred to the district SP office. DIG Ajeetha Beegum said she has sought a detailed report from Pathanamthitta SP.
Sithara said their family was not satisfied with the mild disciplinary action against the SI. They demanded the registration of an attempt to murder case and a separate case under the provisions of SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.
The family members and relatives who belong to Erumeli had gone to Adoor to take part in a marriage reception of their close relative. On their way back, they halted in Pathanamthitta . Five members alighted from the vehicle and were standing near the road.
At that time a police patrolling team led by Pathanamthitta Sub Inspector of police arrived at the spot.
The cops went berserk, brutally attacking the people standing there. All this while they were shouting get lost, move out. When one of the persons asked why they were being attacked, the cops rained him with more lathi blows.. Others standing nearby were also not spared.
The team left soon after thrashing everyone black and blue.
The injured were taken to the general hospital in their own vehicle for treatment.
The police version is that the team of cops reached the spot after getting information that some anti-socials were creating a ruckus outside a bar. Even hours after the incident, top officials remained tight-lipped and chose not to speak to the media.
The family alleged that the incident took place at 11 pm and the case was registered the next day only at 10.30 am. They had no answers as to why the cops beat up the family. A section of cops said it was a case of mistaken identity.
Based on the statements of the injured, a case has been registered against the policemen, including the SI.
