In a bizarre incident, KSRTC drivers at the Pandalam depot failed breath-analyzing tests, but there's a catch. Here's what exactly happened.
Earlier this month, during routine morning checks, three KSRTC bus drivers registered a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of approximately 10 mg/100 ml. However, all of them denied consumption of alcohol.
The reason behind the error was later found out to be jackfruit.
The KSRTC staff pointed-out that they had eaten honey sweet - ripe jackfruit, brought in by a colleague from Kottarakkara and claimed that as the reason behind the result.
To verify the cause, officials conducted re‑test, where a staff member tested negative before eating the fruit, then positive afterward, which debunked the confusion.
After the news spread out, experts said that natural fermentation in certain overly ripe fruits, such as jackfruit, can release trace ethanol-like compounds. These compounds may lead to misinterpretations during breathalyzer tests.
Ultimately, no disciplinary action was taken against the drivers. The incident, however, attracted meme pages, who created funny posts.
